Polymer Processing Online Course & Certificate

Polymer Processing provides an introduction to processing methods used to process polymeric components. Discussion of the concepts and principles of basic thermoplastic processing methods with emphasis on their practical applications in industry. Topics covered will include polymer extrusion, casting, molding, thermoforming, spinning, calendaring, coating processes, materials selection, and manufacturing process selection.

After completing Polymer Processing, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

  • Describe the differences between a thermoplastic and a thermoset material, and the typical properties of each
  • Explain the major manufacturing processes used in the Plastics Industry, including extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, and blow molding
  • Describe the basic process parameters that control the properties of finished products using various processing methods.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different processing methods depending on the end product application.

This course is designed for scientists or engineers who desire to learn how to convert polymers. Completion of Polymer Chemistry Fundamentals or equivalent recommended.

Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam for each course.

  1. Polymer categories (thermoplastic, thermoset, rubber)
  2. Hardware (screw, die, extruder)
  3. Extrusion
  4. Pipe extrusion
