Welcome to Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Introduction! The objective of Module 0 is to provide background on how students should navigate through this course journey. Course Description

This course provides an overview of the pharmaceutical industry, including basic information about drug discovery and development, FDA requirements and approval processes, drug dosage forms, and the role of key operational units in drug manufacturing processes. This course enables the students to: understand the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the global market and its implications; learn the fundamentals of the drug development cycle and the investment required to bring a drug to market; learn the most important drug manufacturing processes and the key elements of dosage formulation.

Course Outcome

After completing Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: An Introduction, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

  • understand the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the global market and its implications;
  • learn the fundamentals of the drug development cycle and the investment required to bring a drug to market;
  • learn the most important drug manufacturing processes and the key elements of dosage formulation.

Course Components

There are 3 course components:

  1. Reading materials
    Students are encouraged to read both lecture materials and the supplemental reading articles. The lecture materials provide an overview of the subject matter, while the supplemental reading provides insight into recent developments in this field of study. Both are required to bridge theory and real-life application.
  2. Study questions
    Students are also encouraged to complete the study questions and submit answers to the instructor. The completion of these assignments will reinforce understanding of the course content. The instructor, being an expert in the field, will grade the assignments and provide timely feedback. The instructor will also be available for answering additional questions, and providing further insight as needed.
  3. Final Project
    The purpose of the Final Project is to test the student’s ability to apply their knowledge to solving (or making an educated recommendation towards solving) a specific problem related to the subject matter.
