Nanotechnology Professional Certificate Program

Nanotechnology is the identification, application and use of novel behavior that occurs at the nano-scale to solve real-world problems. Particles and structures at the nano-scale demonstrate phenomena not seen at other length scales. As a result, nanotechnology is of increasing interest to the materials and physical sciences industries.

The Nanotechnology Certificate Program is an online program designed to cover the science behind the phenomena that arise when considering materials at the nano scale in addition to how to apply this to leading biomedical and energy applications and markets.

After completing the Nanotechnology Certificate Program, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

  • What is nanotechnology

  • What are nanoparticles and nanomaterials

  • How to fabricate nanoparticles and materials

  • How to characterize nanoparticles and materials

  • How to apply and use nanotechnology to enhance energy systems

  • How to apply and use nanotechnology to develop biomedical devices

This certificate program is for those who want to understand and apply nanotechnology to commercial applications. A basic understanding of chemistry, physics, and biology is recommended, but not required.

Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and a final project for each course.

The following 4 nanotechnology courses are required to satisfy all requirements for the Nanotechnology Certificate Program:

Nanoparticles & Nanomaterials

“Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials” is an introductory course that provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, characterization, function, and environmental implications of nanoparticle uses. The types of nanoparticles will include inorganic, organic, and hybrid nanoparticles. This course will also cover synthesis, characterization, analysis, and functions of such nanoparticles.

Nanofabrication Techniques

Nanofabrication is the design and manufacture of devices with dimensions measured in nanometers (nanotechnology). Nanofabrication (nanomanufacturing) is of interest to computer and biomedical engineers because it opens the door to super-high-density microprocessors, memory chips, and biomedical nano-machines.

Biomedical Nanotechnology

Biomedical Nanotechnology is an introductory course that investigates key areas in which nanotechnology can benefit biomedical applications, understanding of nanomaterials for various biomedical applications, wet and dry nanotechnology, and basics of nanofabrication. This course also introduces applications such as drug delivery, imaging and diagnostics, and tissue regeneration and engineering.

Energy Nanotechnology

Energy Nanotechnology is an introductory course that provides a comprehensive overview of nanomaterials used for energy production, storage, transmission and conservation. Synthesis, characterization, application and toxicity of nanomaterials used for energy sources such as solar cells, fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries will be the main focus of this course.
